The mission of the Dirección Xeral de Saúde Pública (General Directorate of Public Health) from the Xunta de Galicia, is to promote, protect and contribute to improving the health of the Galician population, through: 

  • The planning of different actions that contribute to improving health, to guaranteeing the free exercise of the health rights and duties of citizens and to ensuring the same health benefits and guarantees for the entire Galician population. 
  • The development of regional actions to control the risks of illness associated with health determinants. 

The Dirección de Saúde Pública, in terms of water pollution and quality, has among its competences the monitoring of environmental factors in Galicia, the official control of water for human consumption, the use of biocides, the official control of swimming pools, the use of chemicals, and the official control of bathing areas.
